The Birds

The birds were thrilling. I’d never heard those birds before. It sounded like I was in a different country. Wait…

They were hiding in a very leafy, beautifully proportioned tree and calling out. When I approached, they flew away. I wish I knew what they were.

We encountered this Australian Magpie outside of the zoo. They are known to swoop down on people especially during mating season and are able to identify 100 different people.

They also love to have their picture taken.

Lorakeet

These parrots are all over the place. This one was in the harbor. I guess it’s a Lorakeet.

Cockatoos are also very common and as Australian as kangaroos and koala bears. They are called “Cockies”. They would call them that. The flight attendant told me that when she first came to Australia and saw a cockatoo, she thought it was a pet and had escaped. Then she saw dozens of them and realized they are wild here. I didn’t see any.
