Venice Beach
Who is that very tall man, and why is he smiling? Is he smiling at me? Do we know each other?
Our Uber driver, Steve, suggested we go to Venice Beach to watch the “crazy, weird” people. I liked that idea. Steve is also the same guy who drove us back from the Reagan Library which took one hour. Going up to the Reagan Library only took 30 minutes with Ricardo who did not speak. Why this discrepancy in travel time? Could it be that Steve ignored Siri on the 101 and refused to take the exits that Siri was pointing out? Or perhaps it was because we were his one and only fare that day and he decided he would make it as profitable as he could?
He took us all the way up to Ventura “by mistake”. But, you know, we did get to see a lot more of the area due to this unintended tour, We saw farmland, fields, and neighborhoods every time we had to do a uey. Maureen enjoyed it. And I did too. Go for it, Steve!
Santa Monica Pier in California
Los Angeles has re-instated a no-bail policy. This means you don’t have to post bail if charged with a misdemeanor like shoplifting, drug possession, or vandalism. You just go straight home and wait for your court appearance. “Watch how bad it gets out there”, said 50 Cent, the rapper. I am glad I get to watch how bad it gets from the safety and comfort of my home in Florida. As the sign says “Crime and Depravity Coming Soon.”
Our Uber driver Victor dropped us off at the pier. I wanted him to take us to Muscle Beach but he said it wasn’t far so I didn’t argue. But it was 3 miles.
According to this sign, Muscle Beach is a 4-minute walk. That is not true. It took us an hour to walk there. So don’t be fooled by the sign! But first, we went on the iconic Ferris wheel and Maureen took a ride on the roller coaster.
This is the view from the Ferris wheel. Those are the Malibu Hills in the distance. There is a good podcast called “Lost Hills”. It’s about crime and the early days of surfing in Malibu. Lots of colorful characters.
