Serendipity in Phoenix
St. Mary’s Basilica is in downtown Phoenix. I entered and knelt by a pew, crossed myself, said a prayer, and sat down. I was the only one there. Music was playing and people were singing. I thought it was a recording. But then it dawned on me that there was a choir right above my head, where the pipe organ sat. I sat there for an hour and a half listening to their voices and the organ. I closed my eyes. The music was calming. The acoustics were perfect. After a while, people started arriving for a funeral, so I left. I had just been treated to a serendipitous private performance.
St. Mary’s is the oldest Catholic Church in the Valley of the Sun. It was made into a Minor Basilica when Pope John Paul II visited in 1987. Minor Basilicas are chosen for their architectural beauty and/or historical significance.
