Thanks for Reaching Out to Redwoods
We drove to a place where they said we could reach out and touch the titanic Redwoods from our car. You couldn’t really. Moe drove 6.5 miles down a treacherous one lane road on the side of a mountain. We started the drive in a well-heeled rustic neighborhood along a bubbling river that looked like coffee with cream. Then we passed a bride in full bridal regalia. Maureen yelled, “Congratulations!” I said, “That was cringy.” And I never say that. She argued that it wasn’t.

Small Forest Dwellers Unite
At one point we stopped to crawl down the slope to a fast moving, wide creek. She fell on the way down, got her pants a little muddy, and accused me of laughing. But merch, on my mother’s grave, I was not laughing. She said she almost fell head first into the creek. She quickly recouped, and then started to collect stones and skip them.
I watched for a while, but didn’t go right up to the water’s edge. Feeling skittish, I suddenly felt like a small animal in the darkling forest, and if we were animals, then we were decidedly prey. As the mother of a prey animal, I kept looking around. I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, just keeping an eye out for the unexpected. Finally, I summoned her from the creek shore and she readily obeyed. We climbed back up to the car and continued to drive as the gloom thickened. The sun was fading and I hoped we would make it out of the Redwoods jungle and the fast, cloudy water before nightfall.
Down with Gargoyles in the Redwoods
Maureen started to hit the horn when we rounded a curve. “It can’t hurt,” I said when she asked if she should. We finally emerged from the woods and stopped at the Bayview Inn which certainly does have a view of the bay. It’s an odd place actually. There are no buildings in this huge bay except for a house and no one is home. Poor Moe, some gargoyle of a biology lab professor gave them an assignment over Spring Break which was due that evening. To add insult to injury, the professor said that she wouldn’t mark them right away because she didn’t want to work over the holiday. Wow.
