Statues

Such an exciting topic. I’m sure you’ll stick around for this one. But, before you are bored stiff as one, please humor me.

Monument to the Immigrant

New Orleans has a few beauties like this one along the Mississippi in Woldenberg Park. It is a Monument to the Immigrant. It is a monument to all of us. Either we or our forebears came to America for a fresh start, new beginnings or a better stab at it, basically. This lovely woman was commissioned by the Italian American Marching Club in New Orleans.

Old Man River

Nutless

Then we have the duds. Not dudes. An emasculated male with rudimentary breasts and no hands. How revolting. Welcome to 21st century America where everything male is demonized. Good luck with that one. Does anyone have any idea what men have done to enhance western civilization? Anyone? White men, for example? Could they have made this statue using black marble?

Robert E. Lee

Then we have the completely gone ones.

Robert E Lee

This statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was torn down and replaced with, let’s have a drum roll…

Lee's missing statue at night

nothing.

There is a whole list of statues that have been torn down, from Abraham Lincoln in Portland, Oregon to Thomas Jefferson in New York’s City Hall Council Chamber. The serious problem is that nothing is put in their place. Meaning people throw things out that “don’t represent their values.” Well, who does then? They make this claim and then don’t defend it. They cannot defend their values or viewpoint. The dangerous thing is that by cancelling its history, a culture loses its identity and past.

It’s the same thing with Robin DiAngelo’s book White Fragility. She has never once debated her ideas with anyone. Are her ideas so fragile that they won’t withstand rigorous debate? Refusal to debate undermines your credibility. How can anyone take you seriously?
