Dogtown

The USS Razorback submarine is moored in the Arkansas River on the muddy shores of Dogtown. It is the first thing you see on your way over the bridge from Little Rock. The sub is flying a Turkish flag because it was transferred to Turkey in 1971. Then, North Little Rock bought it for $37,500 in 2004.

Turkish Submarine in Little Rock

The Razorback is a species of whale found in the South Pacific. And maybe that is why Arkansas acquired the submarine because the Razorback is the Arkansas State University mascot. But its mascot is not a whale it’s a wild hog. Confused?

Wait a minute. Wild hogs flying around the Arkansas wilderness are “Razorbacks.” So there you go. Is everything clear now?

We’ve been to Little Rock 3 times. The first time, our guide on the tram explained how Dogtown got its name. At the turn of the 20th century, all unwanted dogs were left on the other side of the river with no way to get back. Thus, the dogs multiplied and in no time at all that land north of the river became Dogtown.

From War to Peace, Man

We have now entered the Argenta Arts District. For some reason, Mother Earth represents the artist and creativity. At least somebody thinks so.

Mother Earth North Little Rock

This is Mother Earth. It was created by the same artist who painted the Dogtown Proud mural. Her face is rather masculine. She reminds me of Rush Limbaugh.

Absolutely gorgeous. The colors are magnificent. Bright red hibiscus, black wrought iron, red bricks, the grey of the rock, and flawless green grass. I am sure that the carved figure has something to do with healing. Is that a womb there? Are we talking about creation? This confection of harmony is located next to Mother Earth.

Going out for business?

Excuse me but I need to leave for a few minutes. I’m going out for some business.

Really Old Drugstore

The oldest brick building in Dogtown is the drugstore. And this is the oldest continuously running pharmacy west of the Mississippi.
