Rock the Rails
You can rock the rails for nothing. So we did.
North Little Rock Bound
Since there were big rocks where North Little Rock is, why didn’t they name North Little Rock Big Rock? Maybe then they wouldn’t have an inferiority complex. You know, they could swagger around and say, “We’re the BIG rock around here.” I say this because there seems to be some angst when it comes to their name.
History of Names for North Little Rock
- Opposite Little Rock (I like this one)
- Quapaw
- DeCantillon
- Hunterville
- Baring Cross
- Argenta
- North Argenta
- and last and probably least, Dogtown.
- No, the last one is Argenta Arts District.
Located at 4th & Main Street, the Dogtown Proud mural was created by artist Kevin Kresse.
Ask a Librarian
The guide on the tram ride told us that North Little Rock was once called Dogtown. We got off at the North Little Rock library to ask a librarian about this. So, I asked her. She looked at her co-worker and the two of them sort of smirked and looked away. This is an odd reaction, thought I.
The librarian explained that she really didn’t know where that name came from but that it is derogatory and no longer used by anybody. Hence the mural I suppose. It seems like a few people are embracing it now. And just for the record, I would be proud to call my hometown Dogtown. In fact, you can even call me a dog. Go ahead. I dare you. No, I double-dog dare you.
