Why ‘Little Rock’?
Here it is, the actual little rock of ‘Little Rock’ fame. History Alert: What follows are 3 sentences that explain why Little Rock is called Little Rock. If 3 sentences of history bore you, by all means, skip ahead. Thanks. Apparently, there were big rocks (a cliff) on the north side of the Arkansas River and little rocks on the other side. The little rocks were a landmark for river travel by Quapaw or Osage Indians and white settlers. It was a good place to cross the river. These rocks were also later used as the foundation for the train bridge.
It took 12 years to build the Junction Bridge. It was finished in 1884. Train traffic isn’t what it used to be so it was made into a pedestrian bridge in 2008. It’s an excellent spot to take pictures from.
Sad Note
Do you know how Little Rock’s zoo got started? A wolf and a bear were abandoned by a traveling circus in 1926. How pathetic.
Except in the American South East in the 1920s.
