Monument to the Battle of Grunwald in Krakow, Poland
I am going to have a revolt on my hands if I get into the Battle of Grunwald on July 15, 1410. May I just say that this event was THE BIGGEST battle on earth at the time? And it also changed the power dynamics of Europe FOREVER. It would not kill you to read a little bit about it. At least be able to say, “Oh, yes, I’ve heard of it”. Thank you.
This monument is a copy. The Nazis destroyed the original. Who else? I’ll give you one hint why they took offense to it. The figure lying dead is a Teutonic (aka German) knight.
The King of Poland is on his horse at the top of this statue. Unfortunately, the photographer did not do a good job so we will have to focus on the remaining figures.

John Paul II Pontifical Theological University
On January 11, 2022, this university marked its 625th year anniversary. You can get a degree in theology, church history, or philosophy here.
Oxford University in England has been operating for 9 centuries. And the oldest university in the world is in Bologna, Italy. Ah, baloney! No, seriously. It has been up and running since 1088. Oxford University is the second oldest. It began operating in 1096. More than 6 centuries makes the Krakow one an old one, though. It is actually the 13th oldest university in the world.
I read that the Nazis closed the school down during the war. John Paul II, who was studying here, had to work in a quarry and then a chemical factory. But, according to Wikipedia, it was operating during WWII. So who do you believe the Vatican or Wikipedia?
King Jagiello
You may be asking yourself what was it called before John Paul II became pope? I know I did. Well, glad you asked. It was called the Jagiellonian University. Try saying that fast 5 times in a row. I can’t even say it once.
