Beyond Fortaleza

Norma and I decided to explore the land beyond Fortaleza. Everyone said, “Go to Morro Branco”. It is 56 miles from Fortaleza and took us 1.5 hours to get there. Look at what time has done to that coast.

Morro Branco means ‘white hill’. It is in a town called Beberibe. Beberibe means ‘where the sugar cane grows.’ I had never seen the Atlantic Ocean a turquoise blue color. I’ve only known the Atlantic as a grim, forbidding, watery wilderness. This was really surprising for me. It wasn’t like the Gulf of Mexico either. A lot of Brazilian movies have been filmed here. It is quite an exotic locale. The most expensive real estate in the state of Ceará is in Morro Branco.

We spent the day tearing around on dune buggies, speeding along the beach, and riding up and down the 80-foot dunes. Unfortunately, my little colored sand souvenir was busted in the buggy ride. I went for a swim in the ocean and in a lagoon. I saw some cows drinking water from the lagoon. Finally, Norma and I sat in a chapel on top of a cliff and talked for 3 hours.
