Other High Profile Spots in Fortaleza
Over the following days, Roberto took Norma and me around Fortaleza to see the sights. Mercado Centrale was where we did some shopping. I bought two hammocks. One is “family-sized”. It’s huge. I also purchased brandy, cashews, and coffee. We drank some interesting smoothie-type drinks at a stand. We visited a former Victorian-era prison, Emcetur, that has been turned into a crafts market. I bought some lovely lace there. We also went to a pretty port that used to be a popular place to go, but it’s been taken over by the sex trade. I didn’t buy anything there.
He took us to Dragão do Mar or Dragon of the Sea. This is the entertainment hub in Fortaleza. It is a brightly colored collection of 19th-century buildings. Live music, theater, and films are here, including bars and nightclubs. There is even a planetarium.
Brazilian Writer
This is Rachel de Queiroz. She was a Brazilian novelist who lived from1910 to 2003. She was born and raised on a ranch in Ceará State. Bandits, drought, and the forgotten people of her State were her chosen storylines. She had a brief fling with communism but then ditched it when they tried to tell her what plots to use in her work. You go girl. Stay free and keep it real.
Time Out to Meditate
The Church of Our Lady of Conception of the Little Beach. I read that it is the oldest church in Fortaleza and then after more reading, I discovered that it is not.
The moment I stepped inside I felt calm. I relaxed enough to get down on my knees in the pew and say a prayer for my family, for me to return home safely, and even for Roberto. It’s nice to sit and meditate for a minute.
Alley of Dust
We walked through “The Alley of Dust”. It’s where everyone goes to buy cheap clothes. It is massive and claustrophobic. Everything and everybody is squeezed together. I couldn’t stay there for long. I bought some short bananas and 3 unripe guavas from a cart outside.
In the evening I got on the internet to fight with Delta about my luggage. It took 15 minutes to get nowhere. Then I called their 800 number and got somewhere.
