Twilight at Dachau

We arrived at Dachau at the beginning of Civil Twilight in January. The snow had been falling off and on all day. The camp was still and empty. Only a few people wandered in and out of sight.

The camp stands quietly on this cold winter’s evening but speaks, nevertheless. It says: Here I am for you to examine and marvel at what people are capable of. Only clean and sanitized remnants of me remain to at least prove that I did exist. Don’t think yourself superior and say to yourself, “How could they?” Because you are they. And don’t think that you are safe all these years later because something like this could never happen again. It already has: Bosnia and Rwanda to name a few.

The Barracks at Dachau

One barracks has been reconstructed to represent what they looked like. Behind this building are concrete forms marking where the other barracks existed.
