Shenanigans

Lucy gave me a switchblade knife with a mini flashlight on it. Cool. She had two for me to choose from. I’ve always wanted a knife like this. Where does she get this stuff? Still waters run deep. I love the knife.

M has been riding the elevator too much by herself lately. This morning, she runs ahead of me and gets on it. I arrived just in time to see the doors closing and a tall, dark figure standing in the corner. Have you ever seen the movie “Dressed to Kill” with Michael Caine?

The doors close. I race down the stairs and at the same time check the elevator on every floor to make sure that it hasn’t stopped anywhere. It didn’t. I made it to the main lobby just before the elevator, flung myself into a chair, and pretended to watch TV. Maureen stepped out of the elevator with the tall, dark stranger who, I discovered later, was American. What is the matter with me?

Belarusian Sauna

I paid my hotel bill. It came to $1,068 or 10 million rubles and something. That was for 18 nights. I also got a discount. Anyone who stays more than 15 nights gets 5 percent off each night after that.

One more note about the hotel. They advertised a sauna. Maureen wanted to try it because she had never been in a sauna before. The handyman at the hotel took us down a dark hallway to a room. We entered the room and saw another room that looked like it may have been a sauna. It was. The man explained that no one had used the sauna for a long time. It would take a while to fire the thing up. Or, words to that effect.

It was a dull turquoise color and there was a huge, heavy-looking steel latch on the door. It looked like a sauna out of a 1950’s science fiction horror movie. Maureen shot me an anxious look. There was no way I would put her in something like that. And the price for this luxury was a couple of hundred dollars. Really.

Park of Culture and Relaxation Named after the First of May

Belarusian park of culture

Such a catchy title for a park. It rolls right off the tongue. And yet, it is a pretty place to sit and watch the water and the birds. We saw a wedding on one of the days we were there. This park adjoins the children’s amusement park where we went almost every day. It is also home to the best restaurant in Brest.

Inn at the Park Restaurant
A glimpse of the Inn by the Lake restaurant.

The best restaurant in Brest is called, “Traktir u Ozera” or “Inn by the Lake”. The decor is rustic and the food is traditional Belarusian. I ate fungus marinated in honey. I also had the ‘Tower of Pisa’ which was eggplant, cheese, and tomato. For dessert, I tried the strawberry varenyky with sour cream. You can find their menu here.
