The Vesta Hotel in Brest, Belarus

The only remaining communist country in Europe is Belarus. Or, as Condolezza Rice once said, “The last outpost of tyranny in Europe.” Our people there made us a nice brunch and dinner, then took us food shopping. They took us to our hotel. This hotel actually has a curfew. No one is allowed in or out after midnight. There was a security guard posted at the front entrance to ensure our obedience to authority. Yessir, I really had nowhere to go after midnight anyway.

We stayed here for eighteen days. It is a nice, clean, well-run hotel within a scenic 10-minute walk downtown.

Our First Night in Belarus

Moe and I went for a walk the first night at 7:25 and returned home at 9 p.m. We found a great little amusement park not far from us. We also met Ronnie O’Sullivan the famous snooker player, only in Doberman form. Lovely person. Very handsome. While talking with his human friends, I was intrigued by the way Ronnie could not take his eyes off Maureen. Even before we approached them, and at a distance, Maureen was on Ronnie’s radar. He is that black smudge over Moe’s head.

Close-up of the above photo. Love at first bite – I mean sight.

His unnervingly focused stare was aimed at Maureen for the entire duration of our encounter. Maybe a dog behaviorist could explain this behavior because I’m not quite sure what was going on. Please note the hand on the collar, however.

Ronnie is in dignified repose (but still enchanted with the lovely Maureen). I had never before seen such a large, well-developed, intelligent-looking person of canine persuasion in my life, and was a tad relieved when we finally disengaged from his mighty thrall. This was the highlight of my day.

Ronnie O’Sullivan, Brest, Belarus. We love you, Ronnie.
