4th of July on the Beach
Everybody is on the beach letting off fireworks. It gets kind of dicey when the embers start to land on your head. You could bring an umbrella, but that would only mean that you’d end up with a holey umbrella. And god forbid a sizzler goes sideways. Moe brought a rocket.
American Beach
The first time I came to Amelia Island, I went looking for “The Beach Lady” on American Beach. Unfortunately, I was told that she had just died not too long ago. She was from a pre-eminent black family In Jacksonville. Her great-grandfather, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, bought beach property on Amelia so that black families would have a beach to go to. It became her mission in life to protect the beach from development.
Time Capsule on Amelia
When I saw it for the first time, it was like going back in time to the 1940s. There were small, bungalow beach houses set back from the water behind the dunes. There was a meeting place or community center. It looked like a ghost town, though. Nobody was there. Some houses did not look lived in, while others were definitely inhabited. It was completely different from anything I had seen on the rest of the island. Now I see newer, 2-story houses going up right on the water. So it’s changing.
Little Talbot and Big Talbot
These are barrier islands just south of Amelia; they are undeveloped, nature preserves. Big Talbot has a lot of great driftwood that you are not allowed to collect. Not that I ever went looking for any.
