Fort Clinch

The fortification sits at the mouth of St. Mary’s river and served to protect the entrance to Cumberland Sound. It was built by the Spanish, who were the first Europeans to inhabit not only Florida but the United States.

This fort is named after General Duncan Lamont Clinch. He fought in the War of 1812 and in both Seminole Wars.

Military Life

State park workers reenact military life at the fort by dressing and speaking the part. It’s fun to interact with them and ask them questions about their life there. One of them, dressed in a Union soldier’s uniform, complained that his wife and children were all in New York State, and he missed them.
