Homes on Amelia Island
We have been coming to this island for so long that it has become a home away from home. Even though there is more traffic to navigate now than there was 20 years ago, it is still a relaxing haven for beach bunnies, bikers, and hikers and for doing absolutely nothing at all for as long as you can stand it.
Pippi Longstocking’s House
Does anybody remember who Pippi Longstocking is? She was a character invented by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren, and her books were made into movies that were filmed on Amelia Island. She lived in this house all alone, with the help of a pot of gold coins that her absent sea captain father left her. Her mother died when she was born.
I don’t know how one little kid could be the cause of so much controversy, but people will fuss. The first publisher refused to publish the book. A Swedish university professor called her “harmful to children and mentally unstable”.
She was censored in France for being able to lift a horse, so they made her lift a pony instead. (Big difference, right?) The French also made her into a “fine, young lady” instead of a “weird, maladjusted child”. The Saturday Review once wrote that Pippi was “rude, noisy, and unfunny.” Still, the Pippi Longstocking books are the fifth most translated children’s books in the world. So remember, the key to failure is trying to please everyone. Don’t do it.
House of Ill-Repute
Every town’s got one, and so does Fernandina, the island’s only city. In fact, they even named the street after them: Ladies Street. This house was a former bordello in days gone by.
It was a nuisance, really. The Union soldiers and sailors brawling, drinking, and vying for the attention of the “soiled doves” within. The brothel’s madam made a killing. As a matter of fact, there were brothels all along this street. By the way, President Monroe never called the island a “festering fleshpot” contrary to popular belief.
